Digital Identity: TikTok, a Path to Identity for Young People

Abstract

This article aims to show how the identity of young people between the ages of twelve and twenty-four in Mexico is being constructed through the Tik Tok social network, based on their audiovisual consumption. In order to identify this topic, we will first present the characteristics of this population; secondly, we will explain what they are consuming, and how they affect the construction of their identity. Electronic devices, social networks and the internet have shaped the way we communicate and consume information.

This communication, enhanced by social networks, has developed the way we perceive ourselves, as well as the way we want to be perceived, thus generating an identity. Tik Tok will be the social network that will be analyzed, as it is currently the fastest growing social network.

Francisco Cuauhtémoc Aguilar del Valle, Universidad de Guadalajara

Licenciado en Comunicación Social por la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana unidad Xochimilco (Ciudad de México), también estudió el grado de Especialidad en Políticas Culturales y Gestión Cultural, por la misma institución. Además, cuenta con dos diplomados: Diplomado Interdisciplinario para la Enseñanza de las Artes (Centro Nacional de las Artes, julio, 2020) y el Diplomado en Gestión Cultural (Antigua Academia de San Carlos, UNAM, agosto, 2017). Actualmente se encuentra estudiando la Maestría en Gestión y Desarrollo Cultural en la Universidad de Guadalajara. Profesionalmente se ha desarrollado como Coordinador de Comunicación y Relaciones Públicas en Porrúa (2016-2020) y Gestor Cultural de la Galería de la plataforma digital de Cultura Colectiva.
