Abstract

This work presents an important part of the thesis that was written to obtain a Master's degree in Cultural Management and Development. It includes a theoretical discussion on culture and cultural management, drawing on various authors, in order to arrive at a diverse and meaningful definition that would be useful for addressing the topic of hip hop. It also addresses the history and birth of hip hop, as well as the rejection it faced for many years in the United States of America. Various authors were consulted in order to generate a theoretical discussion on empowerment. The overall objective of this article is to present the ways in which hip hop has empowered its practitioners. Its main contribution is to show the wide range of possibilities that hip hop has offered from its emergence to the present day.

Juan Juárez Martínez, Universidad de Guadalajara

Licenciado en Literatura Intercultural por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y Maestro en Gestión y Desarrollo Cultural por la Universidad de Guadalajara. En 2023 y 2024 fue becario del programa OneBeat, financiado por el Departamento de los Estados Unidos de América. Actualmente, es presidente fundador de Patrimonio Hip Hop A. C., organización que promueve el desarrollo social desde la cultura Hip Hop en Morelia, Michoacán. Director del primer centro cultural especializado en esta cultura del país y organizador de la Primera Cumbre Latinoamericana de Rap: Voces del Hip Hop en 2018 y de la Cumbre Mexicana del Hip Hop 2025, proyecto coproducido con la UNAM que formulará las primeras propuestas de políticas públicas para ese sector en México.
